BEIJING: Malaysians here say they are looking forward to a more accountable and transparent Government, as more members of the Malaysian Cabinet were sworn in.

Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (Maycham) chairman Will Fung said he looked forward to a proper check-and-balance, which he said was an integral element of a true democracy.

“Collective responsibility and accountability ought to be put in place, along with the many other reforms needed in many institutions in Malaysia.

“We have full faith in the new Cabinet, and with the guidance of the Council of Eminent Persons, I can sense that we are heading towards a brand new brilliant start,” added the lawyer.

Fung also noted that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s move to review contracts pertaining to mega projects that involved Chinese companies was meant to send a positive signal to the world that Malaysia was getting rid of bureaucracy and red-tape and adopting a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

Asthy Tan, an operations director in health and wellness services, said she was pleased to see the increased awareness among Malaysians on the power of the ballot box.

She felt that it was important that the new Government be more transparent so that the Malaysians could move forward with confidence.

“We are proud to be Malaysians and we want to live with dignity,” she added.

Jack Ng hoped to see reforms on the education system.

“Provide quality education instead of spoon-feeding students,” added the PhD candidate in film studies.

Ng hoped that the new Pakatan Harapan government would realise its pledge to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate taken by students from Chinese independent high schools.

He refuted claims that Chinese education was a barrier to national unity.

He also hoped that the new Government would look into the financial burden of the middle-income group.
